Giving a gift during your lifetime can offer several advantages: </p><ul><li><p>You choose the timing, allowing the recipient to benefit at a moment that matters—such as funding a study or purchasing a home. </p></li></ul><ul><li><p>You can save on taxes. In addition to the annual exemption, you can make use of a one-time increased exemption. The recipient may pay no tax (on part of the gift). The law sets maximum amounts that are exempt from gift and (looking ahead) inheritance tax.
