What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is already built into your mobile phone. With eSIM, you can connect to mobile networks around the world without having to insert a physical SIM card.
When do I need an eSIM?
An eSIM is especially useful when you travel outside the EU and want to stay online without unexpected roaming charges, as your own provider often charges high roaming fees outside the EU. You do not need to buy a local SIM card or insert one into your phone. With an eSIM, you can go online straight away abroad.
Why does ING offer eSIM?
At ING, we want to help our customers stay one step ahead, even while travelling. That's why we offer eSIM: a digital solution that lets you easily arrange mobile travel data through the ING App. eSIM is available with our new plans. With ING Go, you can purchase mobile data whenever you need it. With ING Student, More, Extra and Max, you receive increasingly more benefits as the plan price increases. That is why travel data is included in these plans as well. The more extensive the plan, the more travel data is included. The eSIM service is provided by Gigs, a provider of mobile travel data in more than 150 countries. Depending on your plan, travel data is included or you can easily purchase a data bundle in the ING App.
What is the difference between ING eSIM and my mobile plan or bundle in the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands, you use the mobile plan or bundle provided by your local telecom provider. With eSIM in the ING App, you can arrange mobile data for travelling. This helps you stay connected worldwide without the hassle of local SIM cards or unexpected roaming charges.
In ING Student and ING More, Extra and Max include mobile data for travel. Why is this not included with ING Go?
ING Go is our basic plan. This helps us keep banking accessible for everyone. For a low monthly fee, you get everything you need for your everyday banking. With ING More, Extra and Max, the price increases and so do the extra benefits. That is why we also include mobile travel data in these plans. The more extensive the plan, the more mobile data for travel is included. Students with ING Student also receive 1 GB of travel data every year. A little extra because studying is expensive enough already.
Why is mobile data for travel not included in one of the plans that can no longer be newly opened: BasisPakket, BetaalPakket, RoyaalPakket and OranjePakket with discount?
These plans remain as they are. They are no longer being developed further, but you can continue using them as usual. It is not possible to take out these plans again. We cannot guarantee that these plans will remain available indefinitely.
Who is Gigs?
Gigs is one of the world’s leading providers of eSIM and mobile travel data services. Through our partnership with Gigs, you can use a mobile data bundle abroad. Simply through your ING App. Gigs provides the technical service and connectivity behind the eSIM. This means you also enter into an agreement with Gigs, the provider of mobile travel data.
How do I know if my mobile phone supports eSIM?
Most modern smartphones support eSIM. Your phone automatically checks whether eSIM is supported once you start the activation process.
Why is my eSIM shown as "PLUS" during installation?
Your eSIM label may be shown as ‘PLUS’ during installation. This is determined by the underlying mobile network and may vary between devices.
What if my phone does not support eSIM?
Then you cannot activate the eSIM. In that case, you will automatically be redirected in the app to an overview of all supported devices.
Do I need internet to activate eSIM?
Yes, you need an internet connection on your mobile phone to activate your eSIM.
What network quality can I expect?
Your eSIM automatically connects to the strongest available network. In most destinations, these are fast 4G and 5G networks.

What happens if I run out of travel data?
You can easily buy a new bundle through Gigs in the ING App. ING Extra customers receive 3 GB per month as part of their plan, while ING Max includes 5 GB per month. Students and ING More customers receive 1 GB of data per year as part of their plan.
Can I use multiple data bundles on one eSIM?
Yes, you can use multiple data bundles on the same eSIM. This is useful if you're travelling to multiple countries, allowing you to choose the option that works best for you.
Do I need to activate a new eSIM for every trip?
No, you only install your eSIM once and can keep using it for new travel data bundles whenever you travel.
How can I see how much data I have left?
You can see your usage in the ING App. You will receive push notifications when your data bundle is almost used up or fully used up.
Do I need to remove eSIM after my trip?
No, that is not necessary. When you return home, turn your primary SIM back on and your travel eSIM off. This way, you can use the same travel eSIM again for your next trip.
Please note: the validity period of your mobile travel data bundle continues, even when your eSIM is turned off.
How do I turn my eSIM on or off?
You can do this through your phone settings. Your travel eSIM and your primary SIM remain stored on your device. You can turn them on or off whenever you need them.
What happens if I change my plan?
Your eSIM remains active, and you can continue using your bundles according to the terms and conditions of your new plan. The bundle included with your previous plan will no longer be valid.
What should I do if my eSIM doesn’t work?
Review the installation and help for installation in the ING App.
Check that the eSIM is activated and selected as your travel data line.
Restart your device if necessary.
Contact support with Gigs, provider of mobile travel data, through the ING App.
In which countries can I use eSIM?
You can use eSIM in more than 160 countries worldwide. In the ING App, you can see exactly which countries are included. You can also view the full list of supported countries at provider Gigs.
Can I keep using my normal number?
Yes. You can continue using your primary SIM card for calls and text messages. This is called Dual SIM. We advise you to turn off data roaming on your primary SIM card while travelling abroad, as this is the best way to prevent unexpected roaming charges.
Please note: If your primary SIM card remains active and data roaming is turned on, your local provider may still charge you for receiving or answering phone calls and sending text messages.
Can I share my connection via a hotspot?
Yes, you can use your eSIM as a personal hotspot for other devices.
