A pre-authorisation is a temporary hold on a payment that is still waiting to be finalised and can no longer be cancelled. Your current account balance or the available credit on your credit card will already have been reduced by the pre-authorised amount, so you know how much you have left to spend.

ING cannot remove or modify a pre-authorisation. If you have any questions about a pre-authorisation, please contact the company that placed it.
When you pay with your debit card, mobile phone or smartwatch, or withdraw cash from an ATM, you may see the status 'Pre-authorisation' for the transaction in the ING App or Mijn ING.
The pre-authorised amount is immediately deducted from the available balance of your current account. Once the payment has been fully processed, the pre-authorisation is automatically converted into a booking. The pre-authorisation date is then updated to the date on which the amount is actually debited from your account (entry date). Any applicable fees, such as a currency markup for payments in a foreign currency or cash withdrawal fees, are added on that date.
How long does a debit card pre-authorisation remain visible?
If a pre-authorisation is not converted into a booking, it expires automatically after 30 days. Please note: pre-authorisations at unattended fuel stations usually expire within 2 days in the Netherlands and within 9 days at fuel stations abroad.
Most pre-authorisations are converted into a booking or expire automatically within these timeframes. In some cases, a payment may remain in the status 'Pre-authorisation' for longer, for example for a car rental or hotel reservation. If the amount is not debited and the pre-authorisation expires, the balance of your current account is updated automatically and the pre-authorised amount becomes available again.
Can I cancel or withdraw a pre-authorisation?
Do you have questions about a pre-authorisation or would you like it to be released? Please contact the company that placed the pre-authorisation. Only that company can adjust or release a pre-authorisation. ING cannot remove or change pre-authorisations.

How long does a credit card pre-authorisation remain active?
A pre-authorisation can be converted, in full or in part, into a final transaction. If this does not happen, the pre-authorisation will expire automatically. A pre-authorisation can remain active for up to 30 days. If the pre-authorisation is not charged and expires instead, the balance of your current account will be updated automatically and the reserved amount will become available again. Please note: pre-authorisations at unattended petrol stations usually expire within 2 days in the Netherlands and within 9 days at petrol stations abroad.
