Please note: at some foreign banks, you may not be able to withdraw as much cash.</p><p>In certain countries, banks have taken measures to help prevent fraud. As a result, you might find yourself unable to withdraw cash regardless of your coverage. This usually happens if you have a debit card issued by a different bank. Unfortunately, Dutch banks can&apos;t do anything about this. We <strong>always</strong> recommend bringing an alternative means of payment, like cash or a <a data-type=\"internal\" href=\"/particulier/betalen/buitenland/creditcard\">credit card</a> as a backup.</p><p>In most countries, you can pay with debit cards that have a V PAY or Maestro logo.</p><p><strong>The Netherlands</strong></p><p>You can use debit cards with a V PAY or Maestro logo to pay or withdraw cash anywhere in the Netherlands.</p><p><strong>Europe</strong></p><p>You can use your debit card with a V PAY or Maestro logo to pay or withdraw cash in most European countries. In some areas, however, you may not be able to use your debit card. If you&apos;d like to make sure you can use your debit card at your destination, the same tips apply for when you travel outside Europe – see below.</p><p><strong>Outside Europe</strong></p><p>In some countries or areas, you can&apos;t pay or withdraw cash with your V PAY or Maestro debit card. Unfortunately, we can&apos;t do anything about this. Before you travel, we recommend checking with a local bank, travel agency or embassy if you can use your debit card. </p><p>You can use <a href=\"https://www.visa.com/locator/atm\">VISA&apos;s</a>* (V PAY) or <a href=\"https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/find-nearest-atm.html\">Mastercard&apos;s</a> (Maestro) ATM locator to find ATMs. We <strong>always</strong> recommend bringing an alternative means of payment, like cash or a credit card.</p><p>* Please note: only tick the V PAY filter box after searching. If you can&apos;t see a V PAY box, it probably means you can&apos;t use your V PAY debit card in that area.</p><p>Good news! A foreign bank, however, may charge withdrawal fees. For Maestro debit cards, we use Mastercard&apos;s exchange rates of the day the cash is withdrawn. For V PAY debit cards, we use VISA&apos;s exchange rates of the day before the cash is withdrawn. We charge fees to convert transactions made in foreign currencies to euros. These fees are called mark-up. The mark-up is %{prijs.btp:debetcard_nieteuro.koersopslag.standaard.perc}%, meaning we increase the exchange rate by %{prijs.btp:debetcard_nieteuro.koersopslag.standaard.perc}%.</p><p>If you have a debit card with the V PAY logo, VISA&apos;s exchange rate applies. This is the exchange rate of the day on which the withdrawal was booked.</p><p>If you have a debit card with the Maestro logo, Mastercards&apos; exchange rate applies. This is the exchange rate of the day before the withdrawal was booked.</p><p><strong>ECB reference rate</strong></p><p>In addition to Mastercard and VISA&apos;s exchange rates, the European Central Bank (<a href=\"https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/policy_and_exchange_rates/euro_reference_exchange_rates/html/index.en.html\">ECB</a>) has its own exchange rate. The ECB exchange rate is the reference rate selected by the European Commission. For transparency&apos;s sake, all payment providers in the European Economic Area (<a href=\"https://www.ing.nl/en/personal/payments/payments-abroad/countries-eurozone-european-economic-area-and-sepa\">EEA</a>) must provide insights into the mark-up they charge.</p><p><strong>Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)</strong></p><p>If you make a payment or withdraw cash in a currency other than the euro, the local payment provider may ask if you&apos;d like to use Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). If you choose to use DCC, the exchange rate of the local payment service provider will be applied. If you don&apos;t, ING&apos;s exchange rate will be applied. Our exchange rate is often lower! At ING, we can only access local conversion rates and any additional fees charged by local banks during the actual transaction. That&apos;s why we recommend checking the exchange rate calculator before you use DCC.</p><p>Payment providers in the EEA are required to communicate their mark-up as a percentage relative to the ECB reference rate to the DCC. They must do this before you approve a payment by showing the mark-up on an ATM screen, for instance. These regulations do not apply outside the European Economic Area (EEA).</p><p><strong>ING exchange rate calculator</strong></p><p>In the <a href=\"https://www.ing.nl/en/personal/payments/payments-abroad/exchangeratecalculator\">ING exchange rate calculator</a>, you&apos;ll see the mark-up we use. You can also compare it with a local payment provider&apos;s mark-up to determine if you&apos;d like to use Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Local payment providers often use a higher conversion rate than we do!</p><p><strong>Messages in My ING and the mobile banking app</strong></p><p>For the first transaction made in a foreign currency in an EEA country of the month, you&apos;ll get a message in My ING and the mobile banking app. In this message, we&apos;ll share a percentage that shows how our mark-up compares to the current ECB reference rate. </p><p>If you don&apos;t want to get these messages, you can switch them off in <a href=\"https://mijn.ing.nl/banking/settings/payments-abroad\">Messages &gt; Payments abroad</a>. </p>"}},{"title":"Additional tips","richBody":{"value":"<ul><li>If you plan on going abroad for an extended time, please check your debit card&apos;s expiration date before you leave. If the expiration date is within the next 6 months, please <a data-type=\"internal\" href=\"/en/personal/customer-service/phone-numbers\">contact us</a>.</li><li>If you use an ATM abroad, the bank may charge fees. The exact fees will be shown on the ATM&apos;s screen. You must approve the charge to withdraw cash. The fees will be charged along with the amount you&apos;re withdrawing.</li><li>ING can&apos;t view any conversion rates or additional fees local banks may charge before the transaction. Please check the <a href=\"https://www.ing.nl/en/personal/payments/payments-abroad/exchangeratecalculator\">exchange rate calculator</a> before you use Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Local payment service providers often apply higher conversion rates than ING.</li><li>Some ATMs abroad will ask for a 6-digit PIN. You can ignore this – simply enter your 4-digit PIN and confirm using the designated button. This button is usually green.</li><li>You can pay with your debit card in many shops and restaurants abroad.
