Your investment return is the profit or loss on your investments. It is often expressed as a percentage. The return is what your investments are worth minus the value of your investments when you bought them.
You can also calculate the investment return over a certain period, for example, a year. Then you look at the end value of your investments in that year minus the start value of that year.

Suppose you invested €1,000 and your investments are worth €1,200 after 5 years. Then your average return is 200/1000x100% = 20%, divided by 5 years, which is an average return of 4% per year.
That’s a gross return, by the way, because costs haven’t been taken into account yet. Investing also costs money, and if you include those, you arrive at your net return.
