A put option gives you the right to sell the underlying asset for a set price during a set period. If the market price falls, you still have the right to sell your shares at the agreed price (the strike price).</span></li><li><strong>More return on your shares</strong><br />You can earn extra return on your shares by writing call options. You receive a premium for this. If the share price rises above the strike price, you may be required to deliver the shares.</li><li><strong>Leverage</strong><br />​​​​​​​Options are leveraged products. Leverage increases the effect of a small movement. You can use options to respond to price movements. With a relatively small amount, you create leverage that can generate high returns. If the value increases, you may be assigned and have to deliver the underlying asset at the strike price. If you do not own it, you must buy the underlying asset at a higher market price. Your loss is the difference between the higher market price and the lower strike price, minus the premium you received.</li><li><strong>Risk when writing put options</strong><br />You expected the value of the underlying asset to stay about the same or to increase. If the value decreases, you may be assigned and have to buy the underlying asset at the strike price, if the strike price is higher than the market price.
