If you then make a claim, you&apos;ll lose five claim-free years. With only one claim-free year left, you&apos;ll have to start accumulating again.</p><p>Making a claim will also cause you to lose the claim-free discount on your premium. This is why people may choose to pay for minor repairs out of pocket. ING does not differentiate between the bonus-malus ladder and the claim-free years overview. This means that a reduction in claim-free years is equal to a drop on the ladder.</p><p>In short:</p><ul><li>If you don’t makea claim, you’re rewarded with an extra claim-free year and a higher premium discount. Having one or more claim-free years is the “bonus” in the bonus-malus ladder.</li><li>If you make a claim, you lose claim-free years. For each claim, you lose 5 years. If you have fewer than 5 claim-free years, you can even end up with negative claim-free years. This is the “malus.”</li></ul><p><strong>Note:</strong> In some cases, you may lose more than 5 claim-free years. But this only applies if you&apos;ve accumulated more than 15 claim-free years. Here’s how:</p><ul><li>Cancel your foreign car insurance and request a written statement using the European standard damage history model established within the EU.</li><li>The statement must clearly indicate how many claim-free years you have and must not be older than four years.</li><li>The statement must be in English or Dutch.</li><li>Take out car insurance with us and send us the statement. If the statement is valid, we’ll process your claim-free years.</li></ul><p>Want to switch now but don’t know how many claim-free years you can transfer? During your application, enter zero claim-free years.
