The service fee is automatically debited every quarter by selling part of the investments equal to the service fee due. If your portfolio is empty and there are no units available to sell, the service fee is debited from the cash part. If the cash balance is zero, it goes negative.

The cash part can also temporarily go negative because of a recurring order. When a recurring order is executed, it is created before the money has been debited from your current account. This can cause the accrued balance to be negative until the debit has been processed. This usually takes only a few hours and happens early in the morning. Once the debit has been completed, your balance is back to zero or positive.

If the cash part remains negative, you can transfer the amount yourself via the orange Transfer money button. ING wants more certainty that you can meet this obligation. That is why ING reserves (blocks) money from your investment account for this, so that you are likely to be able to meet your obligation. This reservation is called margin, and the amount can change continuously.

The further the current price of the underlying value moves against you compared with the exercise price of your option, the higher the margin will need to be. The margin requirement is not a guarantee that you can meet the obligation when you are required to do so.

If you write an option where you hold the underlying value or another option, ING will not reserve margin.
