Christiaan, aged sixty two, has been running the company INDEX Books, for thirty four years which offers a wide range of international titles in their Leiden bookshop but also online. With Christiaan's knowledge of marketing and interest in innovation and international business INDEX Books grew into one of the Netherlands largest online bookshops. Universities, colleges and international companies were Christiaans largest customers for decades. Until in 2010 he decided to explore his opportunities in the consumer market. The number of international students in The Netherlands increased, as did the number of expats. That seemed to me a perfect basis to explore our B2C opportunities.

So plan B. We started working with iDEAL, but that also had its limitations. In the end we switched to the the payment solution ING Checkout , which automatically allows us to integrate many international payment methods into our webshop. Our customers like that very much, but it also works extremely efficiently for us.’

What also contributes to our efficiency is the ease with which we can link different payment methods to our system in one go. That also applies to existing accounts. For example we had a PayPal account for buying books abroad. Now we also use this account for receiving payments. We do not even have the amounts paid out but use them again for purchasing. It is a kind of separate new account.'
