To keep Mijn ING secure, we ask you to change your password every year. And if you suspect someone might know your password, change it immediately. Ideally, you should use a different, strong, and unique password for every account—preferably with special characters, like “vG!8z@p#72&nX.” Otherwise, you’re making it too easy for cybercriminals. The longer and more unique your password, the lower the risk of your account being hacked. But how do you remember it? Here are 5 tips:
 

  1. Use a passphrase 
    Worried about forgetting your password? Try creating a mnemonic. A passphrase can help. A sentence with capital letters and numbers is strong and easy to remember. For example: “I'd rather listen to U2 than to Beethovens 6th” becomes: “Irl2U2ttB6th!”
  2. Replace letters or words with numbers and symbols
    Create a random word and replace letters or words with numbers and special characters. For example, “Sesamestreet268” becomes “S3s@m3str33t2sixty8!”
  3. Avoid personal information
    It may seem obvious, but never use personal details in your password—like a birth year, a family member’s name, or other easily guessed information. Also avoid data you’ve shared on social media (like your hometown, pet’s name, or children’s names).
  4. Use different passwords
    Don’t use the same password everywhere. Use a different password for Mijn ING, another for your email and social networks, and yet another for other services.
  5. Use a password manager
    A password manager helps you create and securely store your passwords. Make sure to protect the manager itself with a strong passphrase—or even better, with biometric access like fingerprint or facial recognition.
